看书，总是从书里看人。

史景迁的《To Change China》，看了三页，传教士们的形象就清晰在目。年轻、博学、天性乐观的Adam Schall（汤若望），好不容易在京城西南角落脚，学习天文，忽然又被打发到西安去传教。毫无怨言地去了，几年之内结交了几位高官，给无数新信徒洗礼，还建了一座有涂金十字架顶的教堂。教会一封信，又把他召回北京，他回到北京，继续学习天文、中国文学、数学……后来给皇帝发一封信，准确地预测了日食的时间和侵食角度，被清廷聘为钦天监。

其他传教士也都是不同凡响的人。摘一段：

Terrentius(Johann Schreck), a brilliant astronomer and mathematician, had been a member of the Cesi Academy with Galileo. Understandably upset by the Pope's 1616 injunction forbidding him to defend the Copernician heliocentric theories, Galileo had refused to give the Jesuits help in predicting eclipses. But Terrentius was in regular correspondence with Kepler, the other great European astronomer of the time, and thus eminently qualified to attempt a synthesis of available knowledge and to lead the Jesuits to a position of dominance in the Chinese technical bureaus.

无论世界多大，顶端的圈子都是很小的……只有少数人在那里创造和影响，相互沟通。

写维基百科的人，也不过是所有访客中的4.2%。渴望创造、改造和影响世界的人终归是占少数的。在17世纪的西方，这样的人不少都去传教了。现在看来，不可思议。
